Tapestry needle size and shape

Choose a needle that passes through the fabric without excessive resistance and allows the yarn to be threaded without abrasion. Straight needles provide control for ends and embroidery; curved needles can make some seams, repairs and restricted areas easier to access.

• Weaving in ends: follow the path of the stitches on the wrong side and distribute the tail over several centimetres.
• Invisible seams: mattress stitch joins side edges without creating a wide overlap.
• Embroidery and duplicate stitch: use a needle that does not spread the stitches or fray the original yarn.

A secure finish

Do not trim the end after only two or three passes. It must withstand the elasticity and washing of the item. With slippery fibres, change direction once to improve security without forming a hard knot.

Store needles in a closed tube or case and always check that none remain in the garment or project bag.

For neater finishing: pair the needles with precision scissors, keep the tools in a project bag, and block the piece with the appropriate accessories.
