What supplies do you need for punch needle?

The right combination depends on the scale of the design and the intended texture. A needle for thicker yarn needs a fabric weave that is open enough to accept it without damaging the fibres, yet firm enough to hold the loops.

• Punch needles: match the diameter to the yarn and test the loop depth before beginning the design.
• Monk's cloth: stretch it evenly without distorting the weave.
• Frames: keep the tension consistent and make regular stitches easier to form.
• Sets: can simplify the initial choice, but always check the contents and their compatibility with your project.

How to prevent loops from coming loose

If stitches pull out, first check that the fabric is taut, that the needle opening remains facing the direction of travel and that the yarn feeds freely. Lifting the needle too far from the fabric between stitches can undo the loops.
